Pathology Department
First Urology is committed to providing world-class service in every aspect of patient care.
We are a local CAP (College of American Pathologists) lab, located in our main office in Jeffersonville, Indiana, with one board-certified pathologist licensed to practice in Indiana and Kentucky. The pathology department started providing service in 2009. Our pathologist offers expertise in urological specimens. Our lab has a chemistry department that specializes in PSA, free PSA and testosterone testing. Keeping up with new technology to better serve our patients, we also offer various urological testing.
Advanced Urologic Laboratory Testing
Our urology laboratory offers advanced diagnostic testing designed to provide accurate, timely information to support personalized patient care and treatment planning.
AutoUA (Automated Urinalysis)
AutoUA provides a detailed evaluation of urine to help detect urinary tract infections, blood in the urine, kidney concerns, inflammation, and other urinary abnormalities. Automated analysis offers greater accuracy and consistency than standard dipstick testing.

FISH Testing
FISH (Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization) testing is an advanced urine-based test used to detect abnormal cells associated with bladder cancer and other urothelial cancers. It can help identify cancer changes that may not be visible on routine urine cytology.
IsoPSA
IsoPSA is an innovative blood test that improves prostate cancer risk assessment by analyzing structural changes in PSA proteins. It helps distinguish between elevated PSA caused by cancer versus benign prostate conditions, supporting more informed biopsy decisions.
PCR Testing
PCR testing detects bacterial and viral genetic material with high sensitivity and accuracy. In urology, PCR testing is commonly used to identify difficult-to-detect urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted infections, allowing for more targeted treatment options.
Histology
Histology is the microscopic examination of tissue samples obtained during biopsies or surgical procedures. In urology, histology is essential for diagnosing conditions such as prostate, bladder, and kidney cancers, as well as evaluating inflammation, infection, and other tissue abnormalities.
Cytology
Cytology is the study of individual cells collected from urine or other body fluids. Urine cytology is commonly used in urology to detect abnormal or cancerous cells within the urinary tract, particularly in patients being evaluated for bladder cancer or unexplained blood in the urine.
CAP is a nationally recognized organization that:
- Accredits pathology and clinical laboratories
- Establishes quality and safety standards
- Oversees proficiency testing and laboratory inspections
- Helps ensure accurate and reliable laboratory results
If a lab is “CAP accredited,” it means the laboratory meets rigorous standards for quality, accuracy, and patient safety through regular inspections and ongoing compliance requirements.
