MRI Fusion Biopsy

First Urology is committed to providing world-class service in every aspect of patient care.

What is MRI/ultrasound fusion biopsy?

MRI/ultrasound fusion biopsy allows 3D visualization and tracking of the prostate by fusing pre-biopsy MR images of the prostate with ultrasound guided biopsy images in real time.

How does it work?

First a patient undergoes a prostate MRI scan. A radiologist reviews the scan and marks suspicious areas. Then the patient will schedule an appointment with one of our urologists, in an outpatient setting. The urologist will use the MR images of the prostate along with ultrasound guided biopsy images in real time, for excellent delineation of the prostate and suspicious lesions when present. In addition to providing a more exacting method to obtain biopsy specimens from suspicious areas, MRI/ultrasound fusion biopsy assists in determining the extent of cancers within the prostate.
